What this calculator does

Enter any AISC designation and the page shows the dimensions a detailer reaches for: depth, flange width, flange and web thickness, and both k-distances, on a labelled section sketch. It reads from the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 (facts only, drawn in our own format) so you can check a connection sketch without opening the Manual.

Worked example

W12X26: depth 12.2", flange 6.49" wide × 0.380" thick, web 0.230", k(des) 0.680", k(det) 3/4". The k(det) value is the one you clear when you set a clip angle or cope.

Common questions

Which k do I use for a cope or a clip?

k(det) — the detailing value, rounded up, which is what fabrication clears. k(des) is the design value used in strength checks. The page shows both so you are never reading the wrong one.

Are these the current 16th Edition numbers?

Yes — AISC Shapes Database v16.0. Verify against the Manual before anything goes to the shop; a designation can be discontinued or re-rolled between editions.

Does it cover angles, channels and HSS?

1,660 designations: W, HP, S, M, C, MC, L, WT, MT, ST, HSS and Pipe. Angles show leg lengths and thickness; HSS shows outside dimensions with nominal and design wall.
