Steel Project Index
Practical steel-project tools, updates, and resources for detailers, fabricators, estimators, PMs, and buyers.
Steel Project Index is a working reference for people who move structural steel jobs: code and standards updates in plain English, software release watching, RFI templates you can copy today, calculators with the assumptions shown, and a weekly email brief. Not a news blog. Not a pitch deck. A binder you keep open.
What you can do here today
- Check the AISC / Code Watch — plain-English notes on standards, certification, and education updates, each with a link back to the official source.
- Scan the Software Watch — what changed in Tekla Structures, Bluebeam Revu, Procore, SDS2 press/news, STRUMIS, and ALLPLAN, and who on the job needs to care.
- Copy an RFI template — five field-tested formats: missing embeds, connection clarification, grid conflicts, coatings, and delayed-response/change-impact wording.
- Run a steel calculator — weight, plate, bolt count, galvanizing estimate. Every formula and assumption is printed next to the result.
- Get the weekly steel project brief — one email: code watch, software watch, market signal, and the template or tool of the week.
Steel Market Signal
We track three different kinds of market context, and we keep them separate on purpose:
- Market and pricing headlines — MetalMiner and Steel Market Update cover metals pricing, procurement, and tariff news. We link the headline; we do not repeat their numbers.
- Official industry and production context — World Steel Association press items, such as monthly crude-steel production figures. Industry context, not pricing advice.
- Public index data — the U.S. BLS Producer Price Index, series WPU101 (iron and steel) and WPU1017 (steel mill products). This is a monthly index series published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, often preliminary and subject to revision. It is a signal to watch — not a spot steel price, not a quote, not a procurement instruction, and not a forecast.
Verify current material pricing with your service center, mill rep, or purchasing contracts before quoting or buying. Nothing on this site is procurement, financial, or price-forecast advice.
Who runs this
Steel Project Index is built by people who work structural steel jobs and got tired of hunting the same updates across a dozen tabs. Every source-derived item on this site is summarized in our own words, attributed, and linked back to the original.
One email a week, nothing else
No account, no product pitch, no gate. The site is free to use; the weekly brief is how you catch what changed without checking five vendor pages. Unsubscribe is one click and actually works.
